Lawyers

Lawyers are people trained in aspects of law who may represent clients in court; American legal representatives are often referred to as advocates or attorneys. When a lawyer enters the courtroom to represent a client they are called an advocate; many never appear as an advocate, happy to work in areas that do not require this type of representation. As a legal advisor, their aim is to provide legal counsel; this is usually when client requires guidance and possible courses of action.

A lawyer who primarily spends time in court is called a trial lawyer; this is an area that requires the advocate to be quick thinking and a competent speaker.Much of a trial lawyer's work is actually performed outside the courtroom environment; conducting research, interviewing clients and witnesses plus handling other details in preparation for trial.

The legal system affects nearly every aspect of our society; this is why lawyers are held in high regard but they must live up to this by living and working by a strict code of ethics. Depending on what area of specialization they work in will decide whether they practice in a courtroom; although they are all able to represent their clients in this manner when required.

Many areas of law now exist to meet the needs of a complex society; examples of just a few are show below:

- Probate
- Insurance
- International law
- Marine Law
- Identification Theft

Considering the number of legal representatives there are, it is surprising just how many will never be required to attend a court of law!

Those specializing in environmental law for example might watch out for the interests of organizations on either side of the argument; for instance:

- Waste Disposal Companies
- Federal Agencies
- Airports

Representatives in this field may be arranging for their clients to carry out certain actions; they might also represent a company in a civil action resulting from work they have already undertaken.

Some attorneys concentrate in the growing field of intellectual property rights; protecting clients' claims to copyrights, artwork under contract, product designs, and computer programs. Major insurance companies usually employ lawyers in their legal department; insurance terms and conditions often change to protect the company from fraudulent claims but they can also be useful performing insurance investigations.

Most attorneys are found in private practice, where they concentrate on criminal or civil law; criminal lawyers defend or prosecute persons charged with a crime; whereas civil law deals with civil disputes, usually between two parties.

There are those individuals that prefer very high profile, ‘public interest cases' both civil and criminal; these usually involve disputes or claims against governments or large corporations. Still other lawyers use their skills working for non-profit organizations and other charitable bodies; this type of work is more about helping those are not able to have legal representation any other way.
