Drivers Personal Injury Insurance
Friday, November 28th, 2008We like to think we are invincible but accidents happen all the time so even if you are the safest driver, it is worth taking out personal injury protection. When you have other responsibilities, especially of a financial nature then this is no longer an option. Some health insurance plans already incorporate personal injury protection along with other areas like disability or terminal illness for example. With the growing number of insurance plans on the market, all of which sound necessary, each family has to weigh up the benefits against the additional financial strain that can be imposed by adding it.
It is important to remember the protection should cover everything that is required otherwise it is a waste of time and money. Not every state has made this law yet but a few have although the amount of protection does vary considerably. In Alaska for example a car driver will require ten times the amount of coverage that a driver in Florida will need. Although there are still some states that have not passed a law on personal injury protection at this time, there is no reason why you should wait until it has before you arrange it.
The payouts on this are good with up to eighty percent cover for the insured and anyone that was traveling in the vehicle at the time of the accident. These ‘no fault’ plans cover almost every conceivable bill, even if the accident was the fault of the policy holder! As there can be considerable costs involved with purchasing this type of cover it is worth looking carefully at any current insurance policies you have to see if any of those areas are already catered for; which could lower the amount of protection cover you would need if you took out a new plan. By checking carefully you may discover that certain costs like medical bills and other expenses are already part of your current cover.
If you were to find that this was case then you may not require a personal injury plan at all or only a minimal cover one at worst. An additional factor to consider is the driving ability and record of the policy holder because this will not only dictate the need for personal injury protection but can affect the overall cost. If you already have a health insurance plan in force, this should cover at least any medical expenses that may be incurred, and should provide for any passengers that are members of the driver’s family.
If any of your regular passengers are inadequately covered or not covered at all, you will need personal injury protection in order to keep them covered. It is not unfair to assume that any person traveling in your vehicle should be the responsibility of the driver and insured individual. Although you may feel fortunate if you reside in a state that does not require personal injury protection by law, that should not stop you from obtaining it for your own peace of mind. Your personal circumstances will dictate just how much insurance you need so the better your health is and the less claims you have made, will help to reduce the policy costs overall. Younger drivers however, do not fair so well if they are inexperienced with little insurance cover in place but they are often in greater need of good health insurance cover to protect themselves and any family they have. Irrespective of your personal situation, thorough research in this complicated area is a necessity if you want to have a safe and enjoyable driving future without financial worries if something untoward happens.
