For many people today, a personal injury protection policy has become something they consider necessary when driving in their everyday lives. Families require looking after as do the payments for mortgages etc. Often personal injury protection or PIP is incorporated into a larger insurance policy which may cover disability, life and terminal illness for instance but can be a stand alone plan as well. This all sounds great in theory but insurance of any kind is expensive and this can be just another costly addition to the family budget.
It is often the case that it was arranged without the full range of cover looked at so may be inappropriate to the needs of the customer. In America personal injury is now a required form of insurance cover in many states although the amount does vary depending where you are in the USA. Throughout most parts of America today, injury insurance has become required by law but the cover required seems to vary considerably from state to state. The figures for this show massive variations with people living in Florida on requiring one tenth the amount that citizens in Alaska do. Although there are still some states that have not passed a law on personal injury protection at this time, there is no reason why you should wait until it has before you arrange it.
Depending on the policy, cover can pay up to eighty percent of costs involved for the insured and any passengers they were carrying at the time. These costs include medical bills, lost wages and other assorted expenses because it is termed a ‘no-fault policy’, so it covers you and your passengers, even if the fault was yours. As there can be considerable costs involved with purchasing this type of cover it is worth looking carefully at any current insurance policies you have to see if any of those areas are already catered for; which could lower the amount of protection cover you would need if you took out a new plan. You may find for instance that any medical expenses or lost wages involved may already be covered within your existing insurance.
So, the good news is that in some cases, no further cover will be required whereas you may have to arrange a small policy in others. Your driving record can also be a contributing factor when considering whether or not you actually require personal injury protection. Most drivers are covered for medical expenses through their own health insurance and often for their family if they are also named in the plan but not for other passengers that may be in the car on a regular basis.
You will need to check these details and not hope for the best because if the personal injury protection does not extend to them adequately, there could be problems. It is not unfair to assume that any person traveling in your vehicle should be the responsibility of the driver and insured individual. If you live in a state that does not have mandatory personal injury protection you may want to add this into your portfolio. How much insurance you need depends, mainly on your age, so if you are middle-aged or older, have good health and liability insurance policies, then you will probably only need minimal injury insurance. Younger, less experienced drivers often have to pay considerably more owing to their inexperience and probable meager health insurance cover but need to start looking to the future for themselves and their family by taking out as much insurance as they can afford. Accidents unfortunately happen but before you rush into buying insurance cover, look into the subject as it could save you some money but more importantly will make you feel more secure when you drive with passengers.
