Drivers Personal Injury Insurance

If you think personal injury protection isn’t necessary then you really haven’t been paying attention to the latest batch of accident statistics involving vehicles! This becomes increasingly important when you have a family that depends on you and mortgage repayment responsibilities to name a few examples. While some people take out personal injury protection (PIP) just for their own benefit, most health insurance policies can incorporate this as an add-on. This all sounds great in theory but insurance of any kind is expensive and this can be just another costly addition to the family budget.

Unfortunately however, it can be very costly in other ways if the cover is not appropriate or does not cover the intended items. Personal injury and property insurance are usually required by law throughout most parts of the USA, though the required amount may differ considerably in each state. In Alaska for example a car driver will require ten times the amount of coverage that a driver in Florida will need. So even if you are fortunate to reside in a state where personal injury protection is not presently a legal requirement, it might be worth considering it for the future.

The cover will pay around 80 percent (depending on the plan) of the costs of the insured and passengers. As a no fault policy though, the plan pays for loss of earnings, medical expenses and various other costs for the policy holder and his passengers even if the insured was responsible for the situation. Some plans will cover some if not all these aspects and it is worth checking these fully before any additional insurance plans are started. You may find for instance that any medical expenses or lost wages involved may already be covered within your existing insurance.

If you were to find that this was case then you may not require a personal injury plan at all or only a minimal cover one at worst. How you drive will also help determine whether or not you need personal injury protection. Fortunately most drivers will probably find themselves covered by their own health insurance policy which will also protect family members that happen to be passengers.

So if your personal injury protection policy does not cover your passengers, it is your responsibility to ensure they are protected. Remember, the safety of a passenger in your car is always going to be your responsibility. Although you may feel fortunate if you reside in a state that does not require personal injury protection by law, that should not stop you from obtaining it for your own peace of mind. Your insurance policy costs can depend on many factors, including, age and current health conditions, both of which can lower your premium considerably. Younger drivers however, do not fair so well if they are inexperienced with little insurance cover in place but they are often in greater need of good health insurance cover to protect themselves and any family they have. Accidents unfortunately happen but before you rush into buying insurance cover, look into the subject as it could save you some money but more importantly will make you feel more secure when you drive with passengers.
