Lawyers
Trained in law and able to give legal advice, lawyers are also referred to by other names; American legal representatives are often referred to as advocates or attorneys. In both criminal and civil trials, the lawyer acting on behalf of clients in court is called their advocate; although they all can represent their clients in court this is a very rare situation. Situations occur that require information on a matter of law and in these circumstances they are referred to as legal advisors. if a client has legal issues that need clarification, this is where they will be of assistance.
One who primarily practices law in a courtroom is a trial lawyer; of particular importance in trial work is the ability to think quickly and speak with ease and authority. However a great deal of a trial lawyer’s time is spent outside the court; they investigate the case they are representing, talk to witnesses and arranging evidence, for example.
The law is a great guiding force in our world and every aspect of our lives is touched by it too some degree; this is why lawyers are held in high regard but they must live up to this by living and working by a strict code of ethics. There are many specialized areas of law which they can focus; however, all can and do appear in court from time to time to represent their clients.
Lawyers can specialize in a number of different areas of society; just a few examples are listed here:
*Bankruptcy *Aviation Law *Contract Law *Personal Injury *Company Law
It depends on the field they practice in, as to whether they will use their skills in a courtroom!
Those who decide to become experts in environmental law may represent any side relating to the disputed issue; an example of this group could be:
*Waste Disposal Companies *State agencies *Land Developers
It is not all glamour though as much of the work involves resolving land disputes, planning licenses and land administration; although they may also be called upon to challenge or defend other civil actions.
Of course one of the cleaner areas that attorneys are involved with is intellectual property rights; it covers digital images, songs and videos; in fact anything that is available on the internet. Lawyers who have decided to become experts in Insurance Law are often used by insurance companies in a permanent capacity; their purpose is to protect the company’s interests against fraudulent claims and advise on the legal terms and conditions used in policies.
Most attorneys work in the private sector working on criminal or civil law; in criminal law, they represent individuals who have been charged with crimes and argue their cases in courts of law; whereas civil law deals with civil disputes, usually between two parties.
Another high profile legal position is in cases where the public interest is served; this can be where a large company or government body may be involved with actions that have affected the general public. Still other lawyers use their skills working for non-profit organizations and other charitable bodies; these attempt to serve disadvantaged people wherever they are from often oppressive governments and companies.
