Lawyers
Once fully trained in matters of the law and legal system, a person is called a lawyer; in America other names are also used for instance: advocate, legal advisor or the more popular, attorney. In criminal or civil trials in court, the lawyer representing the client is then called an advocate; whilst they are able to appear in court to represent their clients some prefer this work more than others. When employed to provide advice on the law they are known as legal advisors; when a client has legal problems that requires available options, they can provide recommendations.
A lawyer who primarily spends time in court is called a trial lawyer; this is an area that requires the advocate to be quick thinking and a competent speaker.Much of a trial lawyer’s work is actually performed outside the courtroom environment; they perform their own investigations into the case in addition to other trial procedures including talking to witnesses.
It is difficult to get away from the law in any of its aspects; whether buying a home to crossing the street, lawyers hold positions of great responsibility and are obliged to follow a strict code of ethics. There are many specialized areas of law which they can focus; however, all can and do appear in court from time to time to represent their clients.
There are many areas now where a lawyer can specialize; just a few examples are listed here:
*Probate *Health Issues *Environmental Issues *Divorce Law, *Company Law
The need to practice every area of law in a courtroom is minimal!
Representing environmental issues can mean they may work for the government or private companies; for instance:
*Recycling Companies *Federal Agencies *Large Corporations
It is not all glamour though as much of the work involves resolving land disputes, planning licenses and land administration; although they may also be called upon to challenge or defend other civil actions.
Of course one of the cleaner areas that attorneys are involved with is intellectual property rights; it covers digital images, songs and videos; in fact anything that is available on the internet. Most large insurance providers engage the services of specialist lawyers in their legal departments; they investigate the legality of insurance transactions, writing insurance policies to conform with the law and protect companies from false claims.
Most attorneys are found in private practice, where they concentrate on criminal or civil law; criminal lawyers try cases or defend the accused party; however civil law is much different and is normally based around interpretation of the law but this is a gross simplification.
Some handle only public interest cases both civil and criminal; these usually involve disputes or claims against governments or large corporations. Lawyers who are endowed with a little more social conscience are the ones who work for charities and legal aid schemes; this aspect of legal assistance is often frowned upon but it is a dignified use of a person’s legal skills.
